Guidelines for Homeroom Coordinators

To: All Homeroom Coordinators
From: Dawne Pappas and Aimee Hammond, Parents' Association Homeroom Parent Committee

Homeroom Coordinator Responsibilities

Thank you for volunteering to serve as a homeroom coordinator for the coming school year. We are confident that your involvement will be a positive experience for both you and your child. In the Lower School (Grades PS -5) homeroom coordinators are assigned by homeroom and work with each homeroom teacher. In the Middle School (Grades 6 -8) and Upper School (Grades 9 - 12) homeroom coordinators are assigned by grade and work with the faculty sponsor for each grade.

Below you will find a list of homeroom coordinators' responsibilities. Please check with the teachers/sponsors to see if they have any special programs or needs for their specific grade level.

We encourage you to contact all the parents in your class and introduce yourself as we begin the new school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the homeroom teachers and middle and upper school sponsors.

Homeroom Coordinator Responsibilities

The homeroom coordinator is the liaison between classroom parents and the teacher/class sponsor, assisting the homeroom teacher/class sponsor in planning and organizing refreshments and special class events. The coordinator should speak with the teacher/sponsor at the beginning of the school year to note dates of parties and upcoming class events and activities. Although teachers appreciate help with the organization of parties and special class events, most do not need assistance during the event. The teacher will ask you to attend if help is needed.

Please try to involve every parent in the class when volunteers are needed. Homeroom coordinators should not be responsible for providing all the food and supplies for an event. The coordinator is responsible for organizing what is needed and then contacting other parents for donations and supplies. Keep a list of parents who volunteer donations for specific events and try to involve every parent in the class throughout the school year. This way parents will feel that they have made a contribution to their child's classroom. Please do not solicit money to pay for parties, events, or presents.

Remember to work closely together with the other homeroom coordinators at your grade level. This is especially important at the lower school level. The students do tend to compare food, favors, and handouts.

The homeroom coordinators provide assistance during the Parents' Association Enrichment Day program as needed. This activity involves our entire student body and includes a variety of programs and activities throughout the day. The coordinators should also organize a "telephone tree" for sharing important class information with other parents when necessary.

Thank you for volunteering!

Lower School Homeroom Coordinator Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities already stated, the Lower School teachers plan parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and at the end of the school year. The coordinator should check with the homeroom teacher about appropriate foods, favors, and handouts. The coordinator also organizes light refreshments for the Lower School Grandparents' Day. The coordinators should provide help in setting up and serving refreshments and assisting with the cleanup.
