Research Tips
1) Come to the library!
2) Use Athena (automated library catalog) to find materials
3) Know the parts of the book you are using - Title Page, Copyright, Preface, Foreword or Introduction, Appendix and Index.
4) Do you know Dewey? Get familiar with the main catagories of the Dewey Decimal Classification system. Ask if you are not sure!
5) Use the Reference Section. Don’t forget to check the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature for current articles on your topic!
6) Use Online Databases, like Grolier Online or Proquest, to find information. This is a fanastic source for information! (see the LINKS section for more information)
7) Use the Internet with caution! Make sure the your sources are current, reliable and accurate! If you are not sure, ask!
8) Check your local public library too!
9) Write or email for information from the "experts."
10) Create a BIBLIOGRAPHY as you read. This will save time at the end! Write down the following: Author, Title, Publisher, Copyright Date, Volume, Web address, Pages.
11) Read and take notes. DO NOT COPY WORD FOR WORD! Paraphrase and cite all of your sources.
12) Outlines can help you stay organized.
13) Write a ROUGH DRAFT. Make corrections!
14) Write your FINAL DRAFT! PROOFREAD before you submit your report. 15) Celebrate! You did it!

Big6/Super3 Research Models

Problem solving models for grades K-2 (Super3) and grades 3-5 (Big6) that help students plan, complete and evaluate larger projects and papers. These are strategies that can help children throughout their lives.

Black Eyed Susan Book Nominees 2009-2010

Every year, students in Maryland schools may read from a list of books nominated for the Black Eyed Susan Book Award. Students read from the list and then vote for their favorite in the spring. Lower School students will be participating in this program through their library story-time and independent reading. It is a very fun and rewarding program that promotes books and literacy! Delaware Digital Library

Connect to your local public libraries, do research or find out more about the "First State." You will need your library card number and a pin number to access the databases. See your local librarian to create a pin number.
