WPS Parent’s Association Minutes

September 8, 2011

Meeting called to order at 8:35 a.m. by President Marianne Buas.  She thanked everyone for attending and introduced our new Vice-President, Jayne Kendall.  She then introduced the returning officers of the Association, President Marianne Buas, Treasurer Tammy Bunting and Secretary Wendy Laws.

Headmaster’s Remarks:  Dr. Tull welcomed everyone back to school and thanked everyone for their help and support for the school.  Back to school nights will be held for the lower, middle and upper schools next week and he encourages parents to attend.  Safe Home Pledges were sent out this summer for middle and upper school students.  52% of the middle school and 47% of the upper school forms have been returned.  Please take a minute to fill it out and return it, if you haven’t already.  The major improvements to the school this summer were in technology upgrades. The technology infrastructure was completely redone to support a totally wireless campus and a new server room was created.  13 new Smartboards were installed in classrooms.  The replanting of the varsity athletic field was a great success.  Follett is the school’s new textbook supplier and ordering seems to have gone well for this first year with them.  They do offer a rental service that was not available to families previously.  Dr. Tull was pleased to introduce Tara Becker as the new Director of Admissions.

Assistant Headmaster:  Mr. O’Hare welcomed everyone to a new school year and reminds everyone to check the calendar on the website frequently for all scheduled events.  You must be signed in to access the complete calendar.  The school has added a volleyball team this year and the team won its first JV game. Homecoming is scheduled for October 14th.

Head of the Upper School:  Mrs. Decker welcomed everyone to a new year.  The upper school has their first trip to the year scheduled for October 19th to the DuPont theatre to see South Pacific.  There are a few spaces available for chaperones. Please contact Mrs. Decker if you are interested.

Head of the Middle School:  Dr. Spurlock also welcomed everyone back to school.  The middle school has their annual trips planned. With 6th grade going to St. Michaels, 7th grade going to Williamsburg and 8th grade going to Echo Hill.  There are chaperone positions available for each trip, so look for the chance to volunteer.  Preparations are underway for the 6th grade play.

Head of the Lower School:  Mrs. Bunting welcomed everyone back to another exciting school year.  The lower school has been given a grant from the Mary Humphries Foundation to redo the Children’s Garden and Bird Sanctuary.  Anyone interested in helping or directing the refurbishment should contact Mrs. Bunting.  Any amount of help would be greatly appreciated.  Please check the website calendar for dates for the numerous field trips for the lower school.  Notices and permission slips are available online for those trips.  WPS has a representative dedicated to the school from Follett.  Please contact Mrs. Bunting with any questions or concerns and she will be able to get assistance with any issues.

Development Office:  Laura Mears welcomed everyone back to school and announced a new fall event for the school. There will be a Back to School Family Night at Hooper’s in West Ocean City on October 20th from 6-9 p.m.  40% of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the school.  The Christmas Bazaar will be held on December 4th, with a kick-off meeting on September 19th in the Burbage Center.  Please feel free to attend, as new ideas and volunteers are always welcome.  The Party Under the Palms will be held at Seacrets on February 24th, 2012. It was a new format for the school last year and was well received. Please volunteer any time or ideas that you may have to help to continue to build this successful fundraising event.   Contact Laura or Susan Beauchamp with any questions.

President’s Remarks:  The Parents’ Association fee this year will continue to pay to have the quarterly lunch orders online.  The fees also pay for the annual Directory and cultural events for all students.  The Parent’s Association encourages everyone who has not already done so to submit the annual PA fee of $30.00 per student, as the Parents’ Association is not involved in any fundraising events. Fundraising events that you see throughout the year benefit the Development Office, which provides all improvements to the campus and technology.  We still have committees in need of chairpersons.  Please contact any of the Parents’ Association officers or one of last year’s chairpersons if you are interested in offering assistance or would like to volunteer.  Please remember that most committees have been up and running for a while so there is a routine already on place.  Committees needing chairpersons are Spring Dinner and Talent Show, Convocation, and Concessions for Fall and Spring.  Committees looking for co-chairs are Uniform Liason and Worcester Pride.  Extra Directories from 2010-2011 are available at no charge in the office.

Committees:  Introductions and Remarks

Worcester Pride:  Mary Lynn Knerr and Matilda Gjikuria.

Convocation: Carol Twilley

Homeroom Coordinators:  Dawne Pappas, upper school, Valerie Gaskill and Aimee Hammond.  Dawne wished to explain that events in the upper school will be directed from the teachers who are working with the students.  In the middle and lower school there is more direct parental involvement in planning and putting on events.

Celeste Bunting added that the school would like to encourage donations from all families when planning events, but specifically no monetary solicitation from coordinators.  This will allow everyone to be involved at a level where they are comfortable.  Please encourage healthy food choices when planning events and try to keep in touch with the coordinators from the other classrooms in the grade when planning events.

WPS Parent’s Association Minutes

November 3, 2011

Meeting called to order at 8:30 a.m. by President Marianne Buas.

President’s Remarks:  Marianne announced that the Teacher’s Appreciation Luncheon would be held later today and that the Book Fair will be held in the library rotunda next week.  The Parent’s Association will not be putting on Beat the Blues this year because of difficulty scheduling the event and associated costs.  January is a very busy month for families and the Association would like to have something that will appeal to more of the student body.  Plans for a replacement event are being discussed, with the possibility of a movie night or separate dances for each of the schools. Please contact any of the officers if you have any input. The Christmas Candlelight service will be held December 9th at 1:30.  The May meeting and dinner of the Parents’ Association will start one hour earlier than previous years so that the Talent Show will be able to start their presentation earlier.  The meeting and dinner will move to 6 p.m.

Katie Emche announced that the uniform committee is working with a couple of local businesses to add additional resources for embroidered items and the khaki pants and shorts.

The next meeting of the Parent’s Association will be January 5th.

Marianne adjourned the meeting at 9:15.

WPS Parents’ Association Minutes

January 5, 2012

Meeting called to order at 8:30 a.m. by President Marianne Buas.

President’s Remarks:   Marianne welcomed everyone to the meeting. Upcoming events at the school include the annual Gala at Seacrets, Grandparents’ Day and a movie night, which will be replacing the Beat the Blues events of last year.  The movie night is tentatively scheduled for March 9th, with a 5:30 movie for lower school and 7:30 movie for middle and upper schools.  More information will be announced later.  Marisa Stebenne will be having surgery and will not be able to care of the message board.  We will look to one or more classes to take responsibility for the board for the remainder of the school year.  Lunch orders will not be processed without payment in full for the upcoming term.  Please contact Kathy Marshall, Julie Smith or any of the Parents’ Association officers with any questions.  There will be continuing discussions about the lunch vendors due to declining Subway sales.  The possibility of adding fruit sales may be addressed after the studies for expanding the multipurpose room have been completed.

Headmaster’s Remarks:  Dr. Tull announced that the school is looking into an expansion of the multipurpose room, which would include more space for food serving areas.  He would like to stress that the school is not adding a cafeteria to the space. The health department regulations are prohibitive, as we are a non-public school.  He will be working on developing a list of needs and priorities to be worked out with the architectural and engineering considerations for the space.  Adding windows will be on those lists.  WPS is happy to be looking at offering full day kindergarten for next year.  Please contact him with any questions.  December was a month packed with activities which showed the holiday spirit of the Worcester community:  the SGA created food baskets, the senior class distributed toys with the Sheriff’s office, there was an all school assembly, and the lower school Candlelight Service and middle and upper school chorus concerts were held during a very busy month.

The next meeting will be on March 8th.  The meeting was adjourned at 9:30
