Berlin, MD – Congratulations to Worcester Preparatory School’s (WPS) 4th Grade students who placed as semi-finalists and the state finalist in the “If I were Mayor” essay contest sponsored by The Maryland Municipal League (MML).

WPS Grade 4 student Lea Jaoude of Lewes, DE was named the District 1 finalist in the statewide (11 total districts) essay contest. Lea was honored with the other 10 finalists at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, MD on May 4, 2022. The 11 winning essays were chosen from 2,200 student essay submissions this year. As part of the celebration, each of the winners received a commemorative plaque, a personalized Governor’s citation and a monetary prize.

4th Graders Anna French of Dagsboro, DE and Estelle Damouni of Lewes, DE also placed as semi-finalists (one of three in the district). All three students are part of Mrs. Erin Shimko’s 4th Grade class at WPS.

This year’s essay theme was “Celebrating the Soul of Maryland.” The purpose of the essay contest is to encourage Maryland’s fourth grade students to think and write about their community as an elected official. The long-running contest is open to all public, private and home-schooled students enrolled in fourth grade during the current academic school year. The students compose 275-word essays about what they’d do about a specific scenario if they held the elected position of Mayor in their city or town.
