Head of School

It is an honor to have been selected by the Worcester Prep Search Committee and Board of Trustees to be the next Head of School starting in July of 2020. My family  and I are excited to become part of this great school, learn and join your traditions, and be part of your ongoing success.

My wife Andrea and I are looking forward to relocating in the Berlin area in the near future and our youngest daughter Anna is eager to enroll this fall as a member of the class of 2022. Our oldest daughter Meg is also very happy, as we will be closer to her as she continues her education at the University of Delaware. We truly love the area and are looking forward to moving.

As you may have read in the announcement by the Board of Trustees, I have spent the last 19 years as the Superintendent of Schools in Ticonderoga, New York. This is a small town in rural upstate New York, not unlike the community of Berlin. However I began my career in education at a small independent school in Daphne, Alabama called Bayside Academy. It was this experience that inspired and motivated me to apply for this position, and I will rely on my time there to help me as I move back to independent school administration.

Over the next several months, I will be working with the Board and Administration to plan for the future, and to make the transition as smooth as possible. I will keep you updated as we progress through this process. I will also be holding a series of informal meetings once we arrive, so you will have the opportunity to get to know me. Please know that my door will always be open for anyone to stop by.

I would like to thank all of you for the warmth and hospitality shown to us when we visited this fall. You all certainly made a great impression on us! For the McDonald family, it is a great day to be a Mallard!

John C. McDonald, Jr. Ed.D.

Dear Worcester Prep Community,

The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. John McDonald as our next Head of School beginning July 1, 2020.  Dr. McDonald comes to Berlin from Ticonderoga, NY, where he most recently served as Superintendent of Ticonderoga Central School District.

After four finalists were brought to campus for interview sessions, Dr. McDonald received the Search Committee’s recommendation to the Board of Trustees who, in turn, unanimously voted for his appointment.

In selecting Dr. McDonald as our next Head of School, the Board of Trustees has chosen a leader with a lifelong passion for education and learning.  He holds an undergraduate degree from Washington & Lee University, a master’s degree from Northeastern University, and a doctorate from Columbia University’s Teachers College in Educational Leadership. Dr. McDonald began his career at Bayside Academy, an independent school with over 700 students, teaching history and then as Middle School Head and Assistant Head of School. For the past 19 years, he has served as the Superintendent of an 800-student school district, managing a $20M budget.

The Trustees value his intelligence, experience, and ability to make connections with a broad range of community members. Dr. McDonald and his wife, Andrea, are the parents of two daughters. His oldest daughter attends the University of Delaware and his youngest will enroll in our Upper School next fall.

Thank you to all the members of the Worcester Prep community who contributed greatly to the search process. We appreciate the commitment of the Search Committee and the members of our school community for their dedication to the integrity of the search and feedback throughout the process.

Finally, we wish to thank Mike Grosso for his leadership as Acting Head of School during this transitional year.

We thank you for your support and ask you to join us in welcoming the McDonald family to our community.
